Trelewis Bowls Club were last night scheduled to take on the might of local neighbours Ystrad Mynach in the return fixture of their Rhymney Valley League ties, the first match - played at Ystrad Mynach was a victory for the home team, as such Trelewis were looking for revenge.

The evening started poorly, with massive downpours of rain occuring during mid-afternoon, fortunately the green had dried out by the time the match was due to commence, during the trial ends the rain once again started to come down heavy, both teams waiting for approx 10 mins for the weather to brighten up, but unfortunately this didn't happen, and the green proceeded to flood spectacularly.

Some of the Ystrad Mynach bowlers commented 'It seems like everytime we visit Trelewis it always rains, maybe we will have better weather when the match is re-arranged'.

02/07/08 - Mixed fortunes for TBC members at Thomastown Open
News Logo

This week see's this seasons installment of the annual Thomastown Open, as per the last few years, the tournament is a mixed event, with the women causing a number of upsets with some quality woods.

Trelewis had 5 players entered into the draw, Andy O'Sullivan, Vaughn Tovey, Ken Turner, Mike Tovey and George Griffiths.

Andy O'Sullivan stormed through his 1st round match on Friday evening, but in what was seen as a surprise result saw Andy succomb to one of the youngest and most up and coming players in the draw, Sara Nicolls.

Vaughn Tovey had a difficult first round match against Andy's wife Norma O'Sullivan, Norma is a top UK bowler, so it was never going to be an easy match for Vaughn, who eventually lost in 21-20 after nearly 2 hours of play.

Ken Turner was drawn against Ron Jones, in a highly entertaining match, it was Ron who took a small lead and closed out the match 21-11.

Mike Tovey withdraw from the event, so his opponent had a walkover.

George Griffiths was drawn against B.Locke in the 2nd round after having a 1st round bye, George was victorious in this match, and is now scheduled to play L.Williams in the next round.

Best of luck to George, who is flying the flag for TBC.

19/06/08 - Trelewis slip up at Treharris
News Logo

Trelewis Bowls Club was last night entertained by local rivals Treharris, played as part of the competitive Rhymney Valley league, much was at stake as Trelewis are steadily climbing the table, while Treharris were looking to stay competitive at the top end of the league, weather conditions for the tie started of reasonable, but quickly decended during the latter part of the evening, all bowlers were glad to get off the green by the end of the evening.

Mike Tovey, along with Gary Champion got off to start which could only be described as 'brilliant', leading 12-1 after only 6-7 ends gone, all looked rosy on the rink, unfortunately - the TBC rink lost concentration, and conceeded many points during the middle portion of the match, with the latter end of the tie remaining equal on the scoreboard, going into the last end it was the home rink who took the points, winning by 2-3 shots.

Andy O'Sullivan, along with Mike James started off very evenly, but the TBC rink played enough quality woods to take a slender advantage for the most part of the game, which eventually led to a 3-4 shot win over Treharris veteran Malcolm Bell.

Vaughn Tovey, along with Nathan Smith also started very evenly, no major counts were dropped, but always found it difficult to control the match, at 8-13 down, Nathan Smith played a top quality 'yard on' shot to push out a Treharris wood to make 5, with the scores tied at 13-13 the TBC rink couldn't hold on to their initiative, and eventually went down by 5 shots.

Tony Galliers delivers a wood, watched by ex-Trelewis member Nicky Watts.

Jack Griffiths, along with Adrian Roberts started off very well, and established a well deserved advantage, going into the final third of the match disaster struck - the TBC rink dropped an 8 which instantly brought the Treharris rink back into the match, with the momentum with the home rink, the TBC rink headed into the last end 1 shot down, but some cunning play from the Trelewis bowlers allowed Trelewis to pick up 2 shots on the last end, and with it another 2 points.

End result: Treharris 10, Trelewis 4

Club Captain Nathan Smith along with Steve Johns got off to a flying start with a 14 - 0 advantage and dominated the entire game only dropping the odd shot, until the last end, the Thomastown skip took out the shot bowl to make a count of 5 shots, the rink played well for most of the game and eventually won by a comfortable 12 shot margin.

Jack Griffiths long with Len Gwynne started evenly, going into the last 3-4 ends everything seemed to be going Thomastown way, as the saying goes they had the rub of the green. Losing by 7 shots.

Mike James long with George Griffiths had a close start and remained very tight through out the game, both teams only picking up the odd shot. Fortunately, the Trelewis rink game out on top with a 1 shot win.

George Thomas rink started well until last 6-7 ends gone, when they dropped a count but despite dropping a count they fought back and lost by a small margin of 3 shots.

End result: Trelewis 10 Thomastown 4

Jack Griffiths, along with Adrian Roberts got off to a decent start, both rinks trading shots during the early ends, heading into the last 4-5 ends, the Trelewis rink was 6-7 down, but fought back to only go down by 5 shots, this small margin was enough for the rink to claim this weeks Marigold points.

Vaughn Tovey, along with Club Captain Nathan Smith started well, but form dipped and consequently dropped a number of counts, going into the last 4-5 end, were 6-7 shots down, but much like Jacks rink, fought back, and was unlucky to snatch a draw after picking up a few on the last end, going down by 1 shot only, 17-16.

Andy O'Sullivan entertained W.Thomas from Ferndale, O'Sullivan got off to a superb start and was 9-1 up, but the Ferndale player never gave up, and at one stage was 15-9 down, but O'Sullivan piled on the pressure and comfortably closed out the game to enter the next round where he will play G.Parfitt (Gelli Park).
